Seligman Rhine

a.k.a. Samuel or Sam Rhine abt 1825 to 1864

Seligman, or Sam as he was known in Texas, arrived in New York August 6, 1842, aboard the ship Meta, which sailed from Bremen in June. His brother Abraham was on the the same vessel.

     

On Jul 17, 1861 in Philadelphia,  Sam married Florence Catherine Ezekiel the daughter of Benjamin Ezekiel and Florence Solomon. The famous rabbi Isaac Leeser performed the ceremony in the Jewish tradition. 


They had one daughter, Eva (Evie).  Along with his brothers in other parts of Texas, Sam sold goods to the confederate Army during the Civil War.  Sam was shot by Jesse Thompson in Clarksville in 1864.


He was re-interred later in the the Philadelphia Mikveh Israel Cemetery #03, also known as Beth El-Emeth Cemetery. The Hebrew inscription says:  


The Gvir (rich/notable man) Pinchas son of Tzvi the Levite, who died on Tuesday, first day of Rosh Chodesh of the 2nd Adar (30 of first Adar), 5624, in the town of Clarksville, Texas. And buried here on Sunday, 19th of 2nd Adar, 5627.
